Circular battery innovation at EU Green Week 2025

What Is EU Green Week — and why it matters for battery innovation

Circular battery innovation will take the spotlight at EU Green Week 2025, the European Union’s flagship event on environmental policy. Organized by the Directorate-General for Environment, the event brings together policymakers, researchers, businesses, and citizens to drive sustainable change.

This year’s theme focuses on a just transition to a circular economy. That means keeping materials in use for longer, minimizing waste, and designing products for long-term sustainability. For the battery industry, this shift is not only important — it is essential.

CIRCUBATT: A Horizon Europe project advancing battery circularity

Funded by the Horizon Europe programme, CIRCUBATT is rethinking how batteries are designed, used, and reused. Its mission is to create a fully circular battery value chain that reduces environmental harm while supporting Europe’s clean energy transition.

The project focuses on four key innovation areas:

  • Smart eco-design for better reuse and recyclability

  • AI-powered aging prediction to extend battery life

  • Green recycling processes to recover valuable raw materials

  • Second-life applications for energy storage and mobility systems

As a result, CIRCUBATT supports the goals of the European Green Deal, the Circular Economy Action Plan, and the EU Battery Regulation (EU/2023/1542).

Why circular batteries matter for Europe’s green future

To reach EU climate goals, Europe must do more than build better batteries. It must make them circular.

Today’s batteries often:

  • Have limited lifespan

  • Are difficult to repair or reuse

  • Are poorly recycled, wasting valuable materials

  • Increase emissions due to inefficient end-of-life treatment

CIRCUBATT tackles these challenges with a life-cycle approach. From materials sourcing to second-life applications, the project embeds sustainability at every step.

Be part of the circular battery transition

The EU Green Week 2025 Partner Event in Münster is a chance to engage with the people and ideas shaping Europe’s battery future. If you work in battery research, clean energy, or circular economy policy, this event is for you.

Together, we can accelerate the shift toward a climate-neutral, resource-efficient energy system.
