How circular battery systems support the European Green Deal

The European Green Deal: a roadmap to climate neutrality

The European Green Deal is the EU’s roadmap to climate neutrality — and circular battery systems will play a key role in making it a reality.

The Green Deal aims to:

  • Cut greenhouse gas emissions

  • Protect natural ecosystems

  • Promote circular resource use

  • Shift to clean, renewable energy

  • Drive sustainable innovation across industries

Achieving these goals will require smarter, greener technologies — and batteries are a central piece of the puzzle.

Why batteries matter for Europe’s green transition

Batteries power the shift to electrified transport, clean mobility, and renewable energy storage. But their production, use, and disposal still pose sustainability challenges, including:

  • High demand for raw materials like lithium and cobalt

  • Limited recyclability in current systems

  • Environmental impact from improper disposal

To meet Green Deal targets, batteries must evolve — becoming more efficient, circular, and digitally managed.

CIRCUBATT: circular battery systems for a cleaner future

That’s where the CIRCUBATT project comes in.

Funded under Horizon Europe, CIRCUBATT is building a new generation of circular battery systems that are:

  • Smarter: AI-driven tools to monitor battery aging and optimize performance

  • Greener: Eco-design principles to ensure reuse, safety, and recyclability

  • Closed-loop: Recycling technologies that recover over 80% of key materials

  • Digitally connected: Lifecycle tracking for better decision-making across industries

The project also explores Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) models to extend battery lifespan and reduce waste.

Through this approach, CIRCUBATT directly contributes to:

  • The European Green Deal

  • The EU Battery Regulation (EU/2023/1542)

  • The Circular Economy Action Plan
