Decentralised battery technologies take the spotlight at EURO2025

Decentralised battery technologies are set to transform how electric vehicle (EV) batteries are tracked, reused, and recycled across Europe. These technologies took centre stage during the EURO2025 Conference in Leeds, UK, where the CIRCUBATT project presented its latest findings.

On June 23, Dr. James Duong of the University of Greenwich introduced a forward-looking study from CIRCUBATT’s Work Package 1. The presentation focused on how decentralised battery technologies can support a more circular and sustainable EV battery supply chain.

How decentralised battery technologies support circularity

The study explores technologies such as blockchain, digital twins, and Web3 platforms. These tools are essential for building closed-loop battery supply chains, increasing transparency, and enabling efficient reuse or recycling.

To map industry trends, the team used advanced text mining methods — including Dynamic LDA and Burst Detection — on a dataset of over 1,700 sources.

Despite growing interest, many decentralised systems still face obstacles. These include technical integration issues and gaps in regulatory frameworks.

A strategic framework for action

Using the Technology-Organisation-Environment (TOE) framework, CIRCUBATT outlines how the adoption of decentralised battery technologies can overcome current barriers. This work also supports the project’s broader goals, such as advancing Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) and Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) models.

These innovative approaches enable battery reuse, improve traceability, and reduce environmental impact across the value chain.

“The study provides a roadmap for putting decentralised innovation into action,” said Dr. Duong.

EURO2025: sharing knowledge and driving impact

Presented at EURO – The Association of European Operational Research Societies, the study reflects a growing demand for smarter and greener battery solutions.

The event helped spark cross-sector dialogue on AI, logistics, and circular economy strategies for clean mobility in Europe.
